About Me

About Me

Hello! I’m Michelle and I’m a chef, cake decorator, writer, mentor and Mom…and like you, I often wish there were more hours in the day.

My blog was created for people who want to make a living doing what they love – and what they love to do is bake, decorate and create sweet art. On this blog you’ll find education and inspiration to help you live a better life and run a better business. In my recipe for success, I also like to include a dash of humour and big pinch of real life – they don’t call this the “no bullshit” blog about business for nothing! . I started my business on my kitchen table, so I know what it’s like to go to bed at 3am and hope that magical fairies will clean the kitchen for you while you sleep…but they never show up.  When I started my business, I had no idea what it meant to run a business, let alone a business that made any actual money.

The Back Story

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California but I now live in Melbourne, Australia.

I’ve been a cake decorator since I was 16 years old, when my sister asked me to make a cake for her wedding shower. Back then my skills relied entirely on tubes of gel icing and containers of Betty Crocker frosting purchased from the supermarket.  I kept on making cake just for fun and taught myself how to do it via books and the Wilton Year Book – it wasn’t until many years later that I took an actual class in cake decorating (it was a Wilton Level One Buttercream class.)

I loved that class so much I decided to go to culinary school, where I got certified as both a chef and pastry chef.  During that time I still made cakes from home (very illegally) for fun and no profit (my charge was $30 per cake and I was thrilled to get that kind of cash in my pocket.) I worked in several cafes, catering companies and bakeries before finally opening the doors to my own business. I ran my custom cake business for 10 years – baking, decorating, teaching and mentoring other cake makers.

Keeping It Real

This blog is where I offer you some reality-based honest help and advice… but I’m also wrapping you up in a massive rainbow sprinkle encrusted hug because I truly understand what you’re going through. I love that the readers of this blog thank me for, “telling it like it is,” because that’s the whole point, really – to share with you, build a community and make you feel heard and understood.

Twice a year I open enrolment into my Build Your Profitable Cake Business class – the ONLY one of it’s kind for our industry which transforms us from “the cake lady” into “the boss lady.”

I invite you to become a part of this community by signing up for the newsletter, or joining in the discussions that happen on Facebook or Instagram . I’d love to get to know you, so please feel free to drop me a line and say hello!

I had to sum up this blog’s philosophy, it would be this:

Love yourself.
Love your clients.
Love your craft.
Be grateful.
Kick ass.
(and do ALL of that with gratitude.)

With gratitude of my own,

  1. Hello Michelle

  2. Hello, Michelle! I just stumbled upon your blog this morning via your SweetAmbs interview! Your blog is just what I’ve been looking for. I am new to the cookie decorating business, and just launched a home endeavor in March – quite by accident. (Long story!) As a newbie, I am still in the “copying ideas” stage, but as an artist, hope to eventually gain the confidence to apply my skills to original cookie designs! Amber is my #1 mentor on YouTube, as my tastes in style, etc..are identical. What has happened, is that the business is taking off faster than I could have expected, and while orders are rolling in (no pun intended! lol!), I now have to catch up with the legal, professional, business end of things, which I know NOTHING about. (I know – I should have laid this groundwork before telling anyone I am now baking for a living! Oops!). I just want to be sure I do things properly, legally, and with integrity, so I am trying to learn the ropes of running my cookie baking business! Any help you can provide here is greatly appreciated! Thanks for your interest in our CookieCraft! 🙂
